I went from reverently packing it into large cushioned bags and boxes to a simple felt bag, to finally whatever would pretend to protect it from any damage. One of the main qualms I have with WD's storage based products is the highly-scratchable glossy plastic that plates their line of products. While at first it glistens like new, you'll soon have scratches crisscrossed all over the entire body, filling you with a feeling of distant sadness. That aside, this harddrive was my first 'true' portable harddrive, and has been through 'the works'. (Large empty candy bag) Anyways, I have not had any transfer problems, no heating issues and I've been pleased with the transfer speeds the drive is capable of. It has come with me to Japan (works well up on an airplane too) and dealt with their lovely summer humidity, it's idled in my apartment during the winter without any heat, and right now it's still chugging along happily.Of course, they have much higher capacity drives now, but this model is one that I can truly trust with my more valuable files.
Unfortunately, I don't have the receipt to contradict or override their information. Disappointed. Very upset. It failed after 2 uses, within 2 months of purchase. WD bases the warranty on date of manufacture, and says it's out of warranty. $$$ down the drain. 'Nuf said.
Occasionally, I'll use it to move large blocks of data. As a competent user (rather than sysadmin, technician, or computer engineer), the Western Digital 'My Passport' 1/4 TB hard drive works well as a back-up or data transfer drive. In both cases, it has performed well.A solid peripheral for a Windows OS computer.E. Functionally, it's a basic USB hard drive, no noisier than others, and so far has been solid and reliable. Aesthetically, it is inconspicuous, which is what I look for in tools that get parked on my desk.As mentioned, the primary use has been as a backup location for my files. M. Van Court
I originally purchased this external hard drive as an alternate place to store my laptop's date from its HD. Movies, photos, videos, music everything can be stored there to be used in any computer with a USB slot available, I barely use blank DVDs anymore. Well, after seeing how great and handy it is to have all my files in it to be taken anywhere I have not stopped using this. For starters, this drive does not require to be connected to an external power outlet, it is powered via USB 2.0 (I have used external CD/DVD writers that use external power outlets so I know how annoying that can be) It is small and light which makes it easy to carry everywhere. I have all my music there so I can synchronize it to my Ipod in my office PC without using any hard drive of it. The best functionality to me: the drive is PS3 friendly, so I have access to all my files from the console, instead of watching videos on the laptop I can now do it on my home theater system.Once I plugged it to my laptop there was no additional install required other than the automatic install every USB drive runs to be recognized by Windows (I am using it with Windows XP) I have not used the backup software included, that is supposed to synchronize with folders in your computer and back them up so there's not much I can tell about that. The read times are quick and it is not noisy at all, which are complains friends have on other models they have used. I have had it for over a year now and it has never given me any trouble, I would not hesitate to recommend this.
Not durable at all. They spin for 2 seconds then stop and then again and again the same thing. I've purchased 2 WD Passport drives and both failed to work after about a year of light use (once or twice per month). I carry them around sometimes and am very careful - this might have hurt their performance, but doesn't portable mean that you can carry them between work and home. They also get very hot and sometimes have trouble stop spinning so they can be ejected. The product is cheap, but I'd rather spend more money for something that won't quit on me. Isn't this the point. DO NOT BUY.
